When practicing S2C, it is important to presume competence in your speller. Many nonspeakers have apraxia, where there is a brain and body disconnect. Although they might not be able to communicate effectively, nonspeakers understand everything in the world around them and have their own thoughts, ideas, and opinions.
An initial assessment is the first step before beginning 1:1 sessions. It is a 50-minute session to introduce your speller to the boards to find the best board to begin with based on their motor and sensory needs and create a plan to best support the speller in future sessions.
An S2C practitioner will read an age-appropriate lesson with your speller and work on purposeful motor movement to answer questions using the letter boards using specific prompting strategies. As motor and cognitive accuracy improves to point to letters, your speller will progress to harder cognitive questions and boards requiring finer motor movements until they are able to openly communicate their thoughts and opinions.
Anyone age 4 or older who is nonspeaking, minimally speaking, or unreliably speaking. Please reach out if you have questions regarding starting spelling with your child.
Services are currently offered in clinic at Chicago and Crestwood, IL
